Earthquake in the optics lab

We talk a lot about the sensitivity of our instruments. This historical graph illustrates quite impressively just how sensitive our vibration monitoring system is. During Christmas holidays in 2004, when even our busy optics lab took a break, our sensors picked up vibrations originated by the big North of Sumatra Earthquake which caused a huge tsunami – see the red arrow in the picture. And while this was one of the strongest earthquakes ever recorded, it still happened on the other side of our planet. Which, apparently, is not far enough for the sensors in our basement lab
